ENABLE WINDOWS COMMAND PROMPT

Below I have formulated some ways to solve all your CMD related problems

Case 1:

Error message: Command not found

This occurs when the local path is not set to c:\windows\system32

To correct this just follow the following steps:

Ø  Windows XP

·         Go to control panel --> click on system tab -->Click the Advanced tab

·         Point to Environment variables

Ø  Windows vista

·         Go to control panel --> click on system tab -->click Advance System Settings

·         Click  Environment variables

Ø  Now point to System variables and find “Path” entry under the variable column

Ø  Double click it and open it

Ø  Append the following string in Variable Value Field “;%SystemRoot%\system32” (without quotes exactly at the last of the string)

Ø  Now verify by typing “path” at the command prompt and see that c:\winodws\system32 string is listed or not

Ø  It nothing works point your active directory to c:\windows\system32\

All the dos commands are stored in the system32 folder. By defining a path variable, windows knows where to find these commands. Alternatively you can still use these commands by going to system32 folder.

Case 2

Error message: Windows Command Prompt has been disabled by Your Administrator

Now this sounds like a real virus attack. Virus generally disables these good utilities to trick us.

Ø  Method  1

·         Enter regedit.exe at the run prompt.

·         If registry editor has also been disabled by the virus refer to this tutorial.

·         Point to this key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]

·         Find this key "DisableCMD"

·         Double click it and in the “dword” field and enter this key “00000000”

·         If the dword doesn’t exist create it

Ø  Method 2

·         Type gpedit.msc at the command prompt

·         In the left section point to user configuration --> Administrative Templates--> System

·         Find this entry in the right panel “Prevent Access to the Command Prompt”

·         Double click it --> In the opened window change setting to Enabled

·         Now run cmd.exe again but it will not run. This is to trick the virus that cmd.exe has already been disabled. So it will release its control on command prompt.

·         Now to enable it just change the setting to Disabled or Not Configured in gpedit.msc.

If both these methods fail then you should use Process Explorer to gain accesses. So you see how easy it is to gain accesses to command prompt without any antivirus.
